by John "Juke" Logan: The Chill (RT 2818) THANKS for letting me visit your souls with
this new collection of songs... I call this album "JUKE RHYTHM"
for several reasons. The RHYTHMS, grooves & musical-terrain over which
these songs ride & dance are very important to the whole. I've always
thought of myself, musically, as being in the 'people-movin' business'...melodically,
lyrically, emotionally, spiritually & RHYTHMICALLY. Rhythm is part
of my job...& if this music moves you than I've done my job right... One of the great things that can happen
is when you revisit former long-time musical partners & come up with
something that's fresh, & seems as vital, or more so, as when you
first played together... Such is the case here with the 20-year-in-studio
reunion of the JUKE RHYTHM BAND. In the mid-70's RICK VITO, JOE YUELE,
DAN DURRAN & I tore-up (figuratively AND literally) the Southern California
club & concert stages with the "JRB", backing up many Blues
& R&B legends in the process (often-times in our "Blues Wednesday"
residency at the Topanga Corral, promoted by legendary hipster TOPANGA
DICK, who passed away a matter of months after contributing his voice
& thoughts to a song on this album). Two of the men we backed-up regularly
at the time became like 'Blues Fathers' to us: ALBERT COLLINS & GEORGE
"HARMONICA" SMITH. Each of the JRB has since gone on to great
musical accomplishments, too numerous to list here, & they each jumped-big
at the chance to re-group & cut some of my new tunes, which just happened
to be on the funky side... It was like throwing a switch. I think we proved
that now, as then, the JRB. can give up the funk with the best of 'em... Once again, I continue to be blessed, being
surrounded by musical partners (in addition to those mentioned above)
who are the best-of-the-best. One could not have more effective musical
'right-hands' than BRENDA BURNS & GREGORY BOAZ. Their talent &
creativity is boundless, & my music would not be what it is without
them. DAVID HIDALGO & CONRAD LOZANO of Los Lobos return along with
Chill-Ace-drummer JERRY ANGEL to help me lay down a 'grinder', & 'Blues-monsters'
KID RAMOS, RICHARD INNES & GARY PRIMICH fall by to do what they do
best. And through it all, the unstoppable MICHAEL TEMPO provides his signature
percolatin'. In a long career full of working with hundreds
& hundreds of recording engineers, I have never encountered one better
than GLENN NISHIDA (who is also a fine musician). My technical 'right
hand' on this album, as he was on "The Chill", he's equal parts
expertise & deep soul. Also central to this music are the RHYTHMS
of the city of LOS ANGELES, my home town. Multi-textural & multi-cultural
rhythms, all the time bustin' through & messin' with ya'... Once again, it's comin' to ya' directly
from my heart, soul, & experience...& once again, it sounds like
it sounds & it is what it is... THIS MUSIC IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY
OF THE LATE, GREAT, MUSICAL & SOULFUL ELINOR "L.A. ELLIE" LOGAN. |
